Does your home have water damage or has it had water problems before?
If you don’t know…FIND OUT!

  • In order to protect our children…we must take the time to educate ourselves
of the many dangers that lurk in our homes.
  • Water damage from roof leaks, plumbing leaks or flooding can lead to the growth of molds.
  • Some molds are very dangerous to newborns and small children.

IS IT WORTH THE RISK???

Many people don’t realize that even the most expensive and clean homes can be unhealthy.

The average household contains between 3 and 10 gallons of materials that are classified as hazardous. Most cupboards and closets are full of toxic materials from air fresheners to carpet deodorizers, perfumes, hair sprays and a myriad of cleaning products.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, a child’s environment early in life can impact the likelihood of developing allergies and asthma. Several studies have suggested that exposure to high concentrations of indoor allergens is associated with higher rates of asthma in children. One study found the relative risk of asthma at age 11 to be 4.8 times greater if the child was exposed to high levels of dust mites in infancy.

Allergic asthma can be triggered by allergens including cats, dogs, dust mites, cockroaches, molds and pollens. However, symptoms may also be caused by other triggers including smoke, air pollution, certain medications and infection. Non-allergic asthma is not triggered by allergens, but may be triggered by other things in the surrounding physical environment.

According to the American Lung Association, babies and children are the most susceptible to illness from indoor air pollutants. Younger children in particular are experiencing more middle ear infections, asthma caused by chemical and environmental allergens, sudden infant death syndrome and behavior problems, just to name a few.

The following is written in The National Academy of Sciences’ publication, “Indoor Allergens: Assessing and Controlling Adverse Health Effects” (1993). Exploration of disease incidence can focus public health attention on critical time periods in the development of disease. For example, the observation that allergy often develops by age 5 suggests that interventions are needed for infants and young babies.
